Obesity now an epidemic
Citizen Health Supplement
OBESITY has become a global epidemic with an estimated 1,3 billion people worldwide being either overweight or obese.
According to the SA Medical Research Council more than 29% of men and 56% of women fall into the categories of being overweight or obese. Statistics reveal 10% of SA women (age 15-24) surveyed in the Demographic and Health Survey (SADHS) were already obese.
"The health consequences of obesity and overweight are varied" says Dr Daniel Meyersfeld, co-developer of the DNA Diet. So what's the solution?
Says Meyersfeld: "Losing weight is a lot more personal than you think Each of us has a unique body chemistry and genetic make-up which determines how our body responds to food and exercise. Scientists have proven that no single weight-management lifestyle is optimal for everyone," he says. "Understanding your genes gives you the power to maximise weight loss and optimise your health. One-size-fits-all is out; personalised nutrition is in. Weight loss today is about designing lifestyle habits that are optimal for your unique genetic make-up:"
DNA Diet (which promotes the concept of optimal weight for life) incorporates a simple genetic test and a lifestyle programme based on an individual?s unique genetic make-up.
The first product of its kind in SA, DNA Diet tests for eight genes that? impact metabolism and fat loss.
The results provide individual recommendations that include gene-based personalised dietary changes, an eating plan to achieve optimal weight loss, and guidance as to the type and amount of exercise required.
Says Meyersfeld, "Over the past few years our research team has identified key genes linked to optimal health, weight loss and weight-loss resistance. We can now deliver the benefits of nutritional genomics to the public at an affordable price."
